I've presented news and views from Maryland's Eastern Shore since 2005, but my writing can be found at several conservative websites.

I brought that point up as well, as a decent percentage of the land recently acquired by the county came from Program Open Space funding and there may be strings attached to that funding which I'm not familiar with. As for the SU aspect, I would support a tax break for the property consisting of its "traditional" campus on the west side of Route 13 and south of College Avenue in return for fully making up the revenue lost from newly acquired properties north and east of there. Route 13 used to be the edge of campus and now pretty much bisects it.

The same principle goes for the relocation of Bennett Middle School - perhaps the county can sell some of the frontage along College Avenue and return it to taxpaying status.

Great piece, as usual. I really like the idea of selling off surplus land, but don't know if they can because the state usually pays for most (or all) of the cost. Ditto with taxing SU. They do make a "payment in lieu of taxes" but it doesn't cover the cost of the services they use. More disturbing to me is their current project that will include retail space, etc., but will not be taxed. We may be able to do something about that.

Keep up the good work!
