Good catch Chester, that would be helpful – although other parts of our newly adopted bylaws take care of some of the issue you brought up.

Great job reporting on the convention!

I hope you mean you want the bylaw addition to state that they can’t endorse or oppose a “Republican candidate for public office…” As you have it in your comment, (the word “Republican” is missing) it would prohibit pre-primary opposition by the party of Democrats. They couldn’t criticize Hillary or Obama ’til the primary is over. I don’t think that was your intention.

But I know you won’t do such a thing, Jim. I didn’t want that provision that was up on Saturday to be codified into the bylaws at this point, preferring to work in the spring on a addition to the bylaws that states something along the lines of, “No candidate for public office, whether local, state, or national, shall be endorsed or opposed by the Maryland Republican Party prior to a Republican Primary election.” It’s very similar to language we have on a county level.

My philosophy is, let the voters decide.

Actually, you did not kill “incumbant protection” but kept it alive!
The resolution in question would have made it much harder to endorse a candidate in the primary. Because it was defeated, we go back to the old by-laws where the Chairman can endorse any candidate even in a contested primary.
