Then the Pilgrims began a period of religious intolerance, where they arrested and deported a group of colonists for, among other things, dancing around a Maypole.  Next stop in our fun fact-filled tour of the religious &quot;freedom&quot; of our early settlers is the Puritans of New England, who saw fit to greet the first four Quakers who arrived in the colony by taking them immediately to the gallows and hanging them.  Next, John Winthrop, governor of the colony, was upset at Anne Hutchinson, whose religious views differed from his.  After being humilated by her greater knowledge of the Bible, Winthrop simply banished her from the colony.  A few years later, she was killed by Indians, an event that was celebrated in Massachusetts by . . . wait for it . . . wait for it . . . an offical day of Thanksgiving!  So we come full circle in our tour of the wonderful world of mixing religion and government.
