photon said it all, I do believe. I have a niece who is married to a Delaware State policeman, when I asked him what he thought about citizens being allowed to carry a firearm, to my surprise he was in favor of it. I would like to see a bill that allows an honest hard working citizen to carry a firearm for self defense. It has proved to reduce crime in other area's, why not do it here?

It is scary for some because they never had a firearm. I got my first shotgun at age 14 and first high powered rifle at age 16. I grew up in a hunting family and grew up with gun safety and always respect the firearm as being loaded to avoid accidents.

1. An armed man is a citizen. An unarmed man is a subject.

2. A gun in the hand is better than a cop on the phone.

4. Gun control is not about guns; it's about control.

5. If guns are outlawed, can we use swords?

6. If guns cause crime, then pencils cause misspelled words.

7. Free men do not ask permission to bear arms.

8. If you don't know your rights, you don't have any.

13. 64,999,987 firearms owners killed no one yesterday.

I appreciate both of your inputs. teeman, buy lots of ammo, you'll need it in this state.

Marc, as I noted at the beginning, I would "trust but verify" comments like yours. I did do some research and will adjust point totals accordingly in Friday's piece. I suspected Ron Paul had a stance but it wasn't anywhere on his website, so the link you gave was excellent background. You also confirmed a suspicion I had in the back of my head about Giuliani.

As for McCain, I'll give him the benefit of the doubt on this issue because (and here's a heads-up) he's getting killed in the next part thanks to McCain-Feingold.

hey michael,

'shall not be infringed' is a strong finishing statement on the right to bear arms. i firmly believe we all have the right to carry... it is how we brandish that can be regulated by legislatures... laws concerning self-defense, accidental homicide, etc., unfortunately our society has gone soft and fear people with guns, because they know only what hollywood has portrayed the gunslinger to be.

i would have loved to see the county council pass a castle doctrine law similar to the florida statutes, i would love to see mike lewis declare his authority on allowing conceal carry in wicomico county.

as a libertarian, i know this country is moving so far towards dependency that i am buying lots of ammo...

A few things about your gun control analysis:

One, Ron Paul is a strong believer in the Second Amendment. You can read an article by him discussing gun control as it relates to DC here: http://www.lewrockwell.com/paul/paul374.html. (Incidently, if you are looking for Paul's views on issues and can't find them elsewhere, he has quite a few columns here: http://www.lewrockwell.com/paul/paul-arch.html).

Two, John McCain is a lot worse than you make him out to be on gun control. Back in 1999 he lead the charge to close the so-called "gun show loophole." You may want to read this National Review article for more background: http://article.nationalreview.com/?q=ZjIwYjQyOGQ4OWNhN2I0Nzc1MTE4NmVmZWRmMGJjMWE=

Three, Bill Richardson has a very good record on guns for a Democrat: http://www.abqtrib.com/news/2006/oct/03/gun-friendly-guv-gains-nra-approval/

Four, Rudy Giuliani is now attempting a little historical rewrite on his past support of gun control. Here's a liberal blogger extolling the virtues of Giuliani re gun control: http://www.americablog.com/2007/06/draft-rudy-and-guns.html

Just a few resources for you to make your ratings as accurte as possible.
